National College Decision Day—the traditional May 1 deadline for most high school seniors to choose a college—passed with less fanfare amid the pandemic.

Some colleges and universities have extended the deadline to June 1 in this most uncertain of years. Increasing financial strain and the challenges of remote learning have added to students’ and families’ stress.

A national study of high school seniors found that of 34% of those who had not yet decided on a college said COVID-19 was influencing their thinking.

“Students are excited about getting into college. I just think the framing of that is a little scary,” said Chymeka Olfonse, executive director of BUILD NYC, a college- and career- readiness program. “If you hear it’s all going to be virtual, what does that look like?”
