Congress passed the largest relief package in US history for people and businesses in response to coronavirus pandemic. The relief package allocated two trillion dollars for those who traditionally have not been eligible for unemployment benefits but now cannot work due to the virus.

Here’s what you need to know if you face unemployment, according to the New York State Department of Labor.

Anyone who applies for either Unemployment Insurance or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance can receive benefits plus an additional $600 per week for 39 weeks. Payments begin Sunday, April 5.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance is for self-employed workers and independent contractors, as well as workers with a limited work history who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have a family member diagnosed with the virus.

Workers who are unable to reach their place of employment because they are quarantined, quit their job, or had their place of employment close are also eligible for assistance.

Anyone who can telework with pay, or who receives paid sick leave or other benefits are not eligible.

Those who exhausted 26 weeks of unemployment insurance after July 1, 2019, should still apply to receive benefits plus $600 per week until July 31, 2020.

To file for benefits, those with a last name beginning with A through F should file on Monday, G through N on Tuesday, and O through Z on Wednesday. Anyone can apply on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays.
